UAE Deploys Agentic AI Assistants to Transform Weather Monitoring and Forecasting

The UAE’s weather body introduced the country’s first agentic AI assistants for the meteorological sector on June 29, 2026. The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) launched two intelligent systems named Al-Rasid and Forecaster Assistant to work alongside human forecasters. This move places the UAE among the first nations to apply autonomous AI agents to national weather operations.

What Makes Agentic AI Different

Traditional AI tools respond to direct commands or perform single tasks. Agentic AI operates differently. These systems can independently execute complex workflows and manage multi-step processes with limited human intervention. They continuously monitor data streams, analyze information, and generate actionable insights without waiting for prompts. The NCM’s agentic assistants function through a unified platform where multiple intelligent agents collaborate autonomously.

Two Assistants, Two Distinct Roles

The NCM deployed two agentic AI assistants in its first implementation phase.

Al-Rasid focuses on continuous monitoring and early warning. It operates around the clock, tracking data from weather observation stations, radars, meteorological satellites, seismic networks, and air quality monitors. When it detects unusual developments or threshold breaches, it issues immediate visual alerts to specialists. Al-Rasid also produces a daily national weather briefing and a proactive summary of expected conditions over the coming days.

Forecaster Assistant supports numerical weather prediction and decision-making. It monitors numerical prediction data flows, verifies processing integrity, and compares outputs from multiple global forecasting models. The assistant analyzes forecast uncertainty and model discrepancies, then prepares preliminary drafts of weather and marine bulletins. It generates an intelligent dashboard that highlights potential weather hazards for the days ahead.

These capabilities let forecasters focus on scientific analysis while making faster, more informed operational decisions.

AI as a Partner, Not a Replacement

NCM Director General Dr. Abdulla Ahmed Al Mandous, who also serves as President of the World Meteorological Organisation, emphasized that AI will not replace human expertise. He described the technology as a knowledge partner that enhances specialist capabilities through advanced data analysis, risk assessment, and timely decision-making. Human experts retain full authority over all final decisions, while AI improves speed, efficiency, and accuracy.

All AI-generated output requires review and approval by qualified specialists before publication, following international best practices in AI governance.

Part of a National AI Push

This launch aligns with the UAE’s broader strategy to embed agentic AI across government operations. The government recently announced plans to convert 50 percent of federal operations, procedures, and services to agentic AI models within two years. The NCM’s meteorological assistants represent one of the first practical applications of this technology in a specialized scientific sector.

The UAE National AI Strategy 2031 prioritizes integrating AI across government services and analytics. The NCM initiative directly supports this vision by demonstrating how autonomous AI systems can enhance operational readiness and build a more proactive government.

A Roadmap for Expansion

The NCM approved a comprehensive roadmap to expand agentic AI deployment across additional domains. Future applications will include climate services, multi-hazard early warning, air quality monitoring, aviation meteorology, seismology, and media communications. The centre plans to deliver these capabilities through an integrated ecosystem of intelligent agents capable of analyzing data, generating reports, and producing recommendations.

A governance framework supports this roadmap. It ensures national data protection, explainability of AI outputs, full traceability of processes, and continuous performance evaluation. This framework guarantees responsible, secure, and trustworthy deployment across all NCM operations.

What This Means for Weather Services

The agentic AI assistants operate in real time, processing vast amounts of meteorological data that would overwhelm human analysts. Al-Rasid provides continuous situational awareness. Forecaster Assistant reduces the time forecasters spend on routine data processing and preliminary report drafting. Together, they improve response times and analytical accuracy under all weather conditions.

This technology also strengthens the UAE’s resilience to climate-related challenges. With extreme weather events increasing in frequency, faster and more accurate forecasting becomes critical. The NCM’s AI systems help meteorologists identify emerging threats earlier and communicate risks more effectively.

The initiative reinforces the UAE’s position as a global leader in applying artificial intelligence for sustainable development. By deploying agentic AI in a high-stakes operational environment, the NCM demonstrates how autonomous systems can enhance public safety and government efficiency without replacing human judgment.
