Meta has rolled out paid subscription tiers across its three flagship apps (Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp), marking one of the company’s most significant moves to reduce its dependence on advertising revenue.
The announcement was made by Meta’s Head of Product, Naomi Gleit, through a video posted on Instagram, with all three plans launching simultaneously under a new umbrella brand called “Meta One.”
What the Plans Cost and Offer
Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus are priced at $3.99 per month each, while WhatsApp Plus comes in at $2.99 per month.
Instagram Plus is oriented around audience growth and content management. Subscribers can see how many people rewatched a Story in aggregate, create unlimited audience lists beyond the standard Close Friends option, spotlight a Story once a week for additional views, extend a Story beyond 24 hours, and preview a Story without appearing as a viewer.
Facebook Plus offers a similar set of features to Instagram Plus, while WhatsApp Plus is focused more on personalisation and messaging, offering app themes, custom ringtones, additional pinned chats, list customisation, and premium stickers.
Meta confirmed the new Plus plans do not replace its existing Meta Verified offering, which is focused on verification, impersonation protection, and extra support.
The Business Logic
The launch follows Meta’s first-quarter 2026 earnings report, in which the company’s family of apps revenue grew 54% year-on-year to $801 million, driven substantially by WhatsApp’s business messaging operations. Despite that growth, Meta’s core platforms have reached near-total global saturation, making subscription revenue a logical next lever.
The move also comes as Meta faces investor scrutiny over its massive AI spending, with the company projecting capital expenditures (mainly for AI data centres) of between $125 billion and $145 billion for the year. Meta’s stock rose nearly three percent on the news.
More Subscriptions Ahead
Beyond the consumer-facing plans, Meta has begun testing new subscriptions for businesses, creators, and Meta AI users, all of which will eventually sit under the Meta One brand. Gleit described Meta One as a platform that will bring all of Meta’s subscription products together, calling the current launch “just the beginning.”
For users and businesses across the Middle East, the WhatsApp Plus tier in particular will draw close attention. Whether the added features justify the monthly fee will likely depend on how aggressively Meta expands the plan’s value proposition in the months ahead.
