OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Go in India at $5/Month With New UPI Support, Its Most Affordable Plan Yet

OpenAI just rolled out ChatGPT Go, a new subscription tier priced at just ₹399 ($4.99) per month exclusively for Indian users on August 19, 2025.

This puts advanced AI tools within reach of millions more Indians. The new plan costs five times less than ChatGPT Plus, which sits at ₹1,999 monthly.

ChatGPT Go Brings 10x More Features at Budget Price

The Go subscription delivers significant upgrades over the free version. Users get 10 times more messages, 10 times more image generations, and 10 times more file uploads compared to the basic tier.

ChatGPT Go subscribers also receive extended access to GPT-5, OpenAI’s flagship model. The plan includes longer memory retention for more personalized conversations and access to advanced data analysis tools.

“We just launched ChatGPT Go in India, a new subscription tier that gives users in India more access to our most popular features,” said Nick Turley, VP at OpenAI and head of ChatGPT, in his post on X.

CEO Sam Altman recently revealed that India represents the company’s second-largest market by user base after the United States.

UPI Integration Targets Local Payment Preferences

OpenAI made paying easier for Indian users by adding UPI support alongside standard credit card options. This integration taps into India’s dominant digital payment system, used by over 350 million people monthly.

The company also switched all its plans to local currency pricing, removing the complexity of dollar conversions that previously made subscriptions feel expensive.

App analytics firm AppFigures data shows India leads ChatGPT downloads globally with over 29 million downloads in the last 90 days. However, revenue from Indian users remained low at just $3.6 million during the same period.

How ChatGPT Go Stacks Against Plus and Pro Plans

ChatGPT Go sits between the free tier and ChatGPT Plus in OpenAI’s subscription hierarchy. While Go focuses on core features like chat, image generation, and file processing, it excludes some premium tools.

Go subscribers cannot access legacy models like GPT-4o, Sora video creation, or advanced connectors. These features remain exclusive to ChatGPT Plus (₹1,999/month) and ChatGPT Pro (₹19,900/month) subscribers.

The restriction to GPT-5 only might actually benefit users who want the latest model without paying premium prices. Free users get limited GPT-5 access with tight usage caps.

OpenAI Tests India Before Global Expansion

OpenAI positioned India as a testing ground for the Go plan. The company plans to gather user feedback before expanding to other price-sensitive markets.

“Making ChatGPT more affordable has been a key ask from users! We’re rolling out Go in India first and will learn from feedback before expanding to other countries,” Turley explained.

Companies like Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube have all launched India-specific plans before rolling them out globally.

Early Access and Subscription Details

ChatGPT Go availability is rolling out gradually to Indian users. People can check their eligibility by logging into ChatGPT and looking for the “Try Go” option under profile settings.

The subscription includes automatic monthly billing with the ability to cancel anytime. Users switching from higher-tier plans won’t receive refunds but will transition to Go pricing at their next billing cycle.

OpenAI also confirmed that Go subscribers can use their benefits when accessing ChatGPT through WhatsApp via the company’s 1-800-ChatGPT service.

The launch represents OpenAI’s most aggressive pricing strategy yet. By targeting India’s price-conscious market with local payment methods and affordable pricing, the company will convert millions of free users into paying subscribers.

This India-first approach could reshape how global AI companies think about emerging market pricing. Success here might prompt similar affordable plans in other developing regions where premium AI subscriptions remain out of reach for most users.
