du 5G connection

du, in partnership with Nokia and MediaTek, has achieved an industry-first 6.3 Gbps peak downlink speed on a live 5G network in the UAE, along with 495 Mbps uplink. The milestone was reached using advanced carrier aggregation across multiple spectrum bands, setting a new benchmark for mobile connectivity in the region.

Redefining What 5G Can Do

The trial combined four TDD carriers across 400 MHz in the downlink, spanning the 3.5 GHz and 2.6 GHz bands, while aggregating two carriers for the uplink. Nokia supplied its AirScale Levante and Ponente baseband units and dual-band massive MIMO radios, while MediaTek contributed its 5G Release‑18 M90 modem platform.

According to du’s CTO, Saleem Albalooshi, this breakthrough “future-proofs our network infrastructure to meet the evolving demands of AI-driven applications, enterprise solutions, and next-generation digital experiences.”

Impact on Users

For consumers and businesses, these speeds open possibilities previously limited by slower networks. Large files can be downloaded in seconds, ultra-high-definition content streams without buffering, and cloud-based applications respond instantly. The improved uplink capacity also benefits live streaming, remote work, and content creation, creating a more seamless digital experience.

From Trial to Everyday Use

While the trial demonstrates peak speeds, the key question is how soon users will experience this level of performance. Device compatibility, coverage, and consistent speeds across the network will determine the real-world impact. Nevertheless, this achievement highlights the UAE’s position as a leader in next-generation mobile technology and sets the stage for a more connected, high-speed digital environment.

A New Era for 5G in the UAE

By pushing live 5G speeds beyond 6 Gbps, du, Nokia, and MediaTek are demonstrating that advanced carrier aggregation and cutting-edge network infrastructure are poised to transform mobile experiences. For businesses, creators, and everyday users, the future promises faster, more reliable, and more capable connectivity. This is a critical step as the UAE continues to build a digital-first economy.
