UAE Strikes Major AI Deal to Transform Food Security with Digital Innovation

Abu Dhabi’s agriculture authority partners with federal AI office to build world-class farming systems that could feed the nation by 2051.

Omar Sultan Al Olama, the country’s Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, has signed a major partnership with Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) to use AI technology for food security.

The partnership brings together the federal AI office with Abu Dhabi’s main agriculture regulator to create new digital solutions for farming.

ADAFSA Leads Global Agriculture AI Standards

ADAFSA became the first agriculture organization worldwide to receive ISO 42001:2023 certification for Artificial Intelligence Management Systems. This certification proves the authority can manage AI systems safely and effectively.

The certification also makes ADAFSA the first UAE government entity to achieve this standard. It shows how the Emirates leads in responsible AI use across government sectors.

“The UAE continues to lead globally in adopting AI and the latest smart technologies across various sectors, including agriculture and food safety,” officials stated when announcing the certification.

Partnership Focuses on Practical AI Solutions

The collaboration between Al Olama’s office and ADAFSA will create hands-on learning programs. Teams will work through workshops, competitions, and hackathons to build solutions for real farming challenges.

These programs target sustainable farming practices and better food safety standards. The partnership promises to develop digital skills within government teams while fostering innovation culture.

The initiative puts humans at the center of the UAE’s technology ecosystem. It supports AI projects that help communities while making the agriculture sector more efficient.

UAE National Food Security Strategy 2051 Gets AI Boost

This partnership directly supports the UAE’s National Food Security Strategy 2051, which seeks to make the country number one in the Global Food Security Index by 2051.

The strategy focuses on increasing domestic food production to 50% by 2051. The UAE plans to enhance its food supply by building new farms and promoting national programs like Plant the Emirates.

Technology and research form core pillars of this strategy. The ADAFSA partnership brings advanced AI tools to help achieve these ambitious goals.

ADAFSA Powers Abu Dhabi’s Agriculture Future

ADAFSA was established by Law No. 7 of 2019 as Abu Dhabi’s main government body for agriculture, food safety, and food security. The authority has comprehensive powers to issue licenses and permits for agricultural activities.

The organization supervises and inspects farms, food facilities, and agricultural materials throughout Abu Dhabi. It develops policies to ensure the sector remains sustainable while launching programs to increase agriculture’s contribution to Abu Dhabi’s GDP.

ADAFSA received more than 20 global awards in 2024 for developing digital government services. The authority also manages emergency food reserves in cooperation with other government bodies.

Technology Innovation Drives Food Security Success

The UAE embraces various technologies to boost food production. These include soilless hydroponic farming and organic agriculture methods that use less water and produce more food.

The country prioritizes water conservation, which remains crucial for sustainable agriculture in the desert climate. Government ministries focus on raising water awareness while promoting efficient farming techniques.

Recent initiatives include the AIM for Climate program, established in 2021 to promote investment in climate-smart agriculture and food systems innovation.

Partnership Timeline and Expected Impact

The agreement was signed recently as part of the UAE’s efforts to strengthen its position as a global AI leader. The partnership will develop innovative solutions through collaborative programs between government teams.

Expected outcomes include enhanced digital skills development, improved innovation culture within teams, and support for the UAE’s digital transformation goals across government entities.

The initiative will create sustainable farming practices and elevated food safety standards that support the nation’s long-term food security objectives.

This partnership positions the UAE as a pioneer in AI-driven agriculture while supporting the country’s vision to become a global hub for food security innovation by 2051.
