Dubai’s XPANCEO Becomes Unicorn with $250M Raise for Smart Contact Lenses

A Dubai-based startup just landed one of the largest funding rounds in Middle East tech history. XPANCEO raised $250 million in Series A funding to develop smart contact lenses that offer night vision, augmented reality, and health monitoring capabilities.

The round, led by Hong Kong-based Opportunity Venture (Asia), values the company at $1.35 billion. This makes XPANCEO the UAE’s 12th unicorn and positions it as a major player in the emerging smart contact lens market.

Roman Axelrod and Dr. Valentyn Volkov founded the company in 2021. Axelrod brings experience from computer vision, esports, and fintech ventures. Volkov leads the scientific side as a recognized expert in nanophotonics and materials science.

Smart Contact Lenses Replace Smartphones and Glasses

XPANCEO’s contact lenses pack multiple technologies into a device thinner than human hair. The lenses feature microprojectors that beam augmented reality visuals directly onto the wearer’s retina. They also include AI chips, biosensors, and wireless connectivity.

Users control the lenses through voice commands, eye movements, and gestures. The company plans to add mind control capabilities later. The lenses offer a 30-degree field of view while consuming just 1-3 microwatts of power, 300 times less than typical AR headsets.

The technology goes beyond simple displays. Night vision capabilities let users see in low-light conditions. Optical zoom and color correction features help people with vision impairments. The lenses can even share live video feeds from drones or teammates.

Health Monitoring Through Tear Fluid Analysis

The health monitoring features set XPANCEO apart from entertainment-focused AR devices. The lenses track intraocular pressure with 50% more precision than existing glaucoma monitoring solutions. This provides continuous, non-invasive eye health surveillance.

Another version analyzes tear fluid to detect biomarkers like glucose, cortisol, and hormones. This enables real-time health tracking without blood tests or other invasive procedures. The technology could help millions manage chronic conditions like diabetes.

The lenses support wireless charging through a companion device. This compact unit, roughly the size of a contact lens case, handles charging and data processing while the wearer sleeps.

Advanced Materials Enable Miniaturization Breakthrough

The company’s scientific breakthrough centers on 2D materials and nanophotonics. These materials offer near-perfect transparency while maintaining electrical conductivity. Dr. Volkov’s team uses these properties to create microscopic waveguides that direct light without distortion.

Traditional smartphone components are too bulky for contact lens applications. XPANCEO developed entirely new approaches using materials with anisotropic properties – they behave differently depending on light direction. This allows precise light control within the lens structure.

The company has produced 15 working prototypes in under two years. These include versions for AR vision, glucose monitoring, wireless data transmission, and night vision.

Market Launch Timeline Depends on Medical Trials

XPANCEO treats its lenses as medical devices rather than consumer gadgets. This means extensive regulatory approval processes including biocompatibility testing and clinical trials. The company expects to begin human trials by late 2026.

Commercial launch is planned for 2027-2028, pending successful trial results. The company will initially target early adopters and contact lens users before expanding to broader markets.

Pricing is set at $900 annually – $50 monthly for replacement lenses plus $300 yearly for the subscription service. The subscription includes the companion charging device and software updates.

XPANCEO aims for 15,000 users by 2026, growing to 10 million by 2032. The company projects the global smart contact lens market will exceed $750 billion in the next decade.

Competition Intensifies in Wearable AR Market

XPANCEO faces competition from tech giants pursuing different approaches. Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses already offer AI assistance, photography, and music playback. Apple reportedly plans smart glasses by late 2026. Google is developing AI-powered glasses through partnerships with Warby Parker and others.

However, most competitors focus on bulky glasses or headsets. XPANCEO’s invisible form factor could provide significant advantages. The company claims its technology puts them five years ahead of major players still developing glasses-based solutions.

Previous smart contact lens attempts have struggled. Google canceled its blood sugar monitoring lens in 2018 due to accuracy issues. California-based Mojo Vision shut down despite raising $226 million. Switzerland’s Sensimed offers the only approved smart contact lens, limited to glaucoma monitoring.

Privacy and Safety Considerations

Smart contact lenses raise important privacy and safety questions. Built-in cameras could enable unauthorized recording or surveillance. The company acknowledges these concerns and plans AI-powered safeguards.

Safety algorithms will prevent usage in dangerous situations like driving or near subway tracks. The system will enforce legal and ethical boundaries similar to existing restrictions on smartphone use while driving.

XPANCEO emphasizes that radiation levels match standard headphones. The ultra-thin, flexible materials prioritize user comfort and long-term wearability. Extensive testing ensures biocompatibility before market release.

Looking Ahead to Human-Computer Integration

XPANCEO’s vision extends beyond simple wearable technology. The founders believe in transhumanism – integrating biology and technology to transcend current human limitations. They see smart contact lenses as a step toward enhanced human capabilities.

Axelrod explained: “I believe this advanced species will be capable of effortlessly controlling devices with their minds, learning instantaneously, exchanging information seamlessly and enjoying longer, healthier lives.”

Success could redefine human-computer interaction and establish new standards for personal computing.
