Saudi Arabia just launched something big in AI. Here’s why it matters.

Saudi King

This week, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman unveiled a new AI company called HUMAIN. It’s a bold name, and a bold ambition.

HUMAIN isn’t just another tech startup. It’s backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, chaired by the Crown Prince himself, and aims to build world-class artificial intelligence infrastructure, from next-gen data centers to advanced Arabic language large language models (LLMs).

Think of it like this: if OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Meta are writing the global script for AI, Saudi Arabia just stood up and said, we want a seat at that table, and we’re bringing our own language, culture, and vision with us.

And here’s the wild part: they might actually pull it off.

Why now?

Saudi Arabia isn’t new to bold bets. Remember NEOM, the $500 billion city of the future? But HUMAIN feels different. This isn’t a moonshot. This is infrastructure.

It’s part of a much larger strategy to diversify the Saudi economy, push beyond oil, and build a digital economy powered by its most underutilized asset: its people.

Saudi Arabia has a young, tech-savvy population, a central geographic location connecting three continents, and a government willing to invest heavily in digital transformation. In fact, it just ranked number one globally in government AI strategy on the 2024 Global AI Index.

What will HUMAIN actually do?

At its core, HUMAIN will:

  • Build advanced AI models (especially in Arabic, where there’s a huge gap)
  • Develop cloud computing infrastructure and data centers
  • Deliver AI solutions to sectors like healthcare, energy, manufacturing, and finance
  • Support local innovation, safeguard intellectual property, and attract global talent

But more than that, HUMAIN is designed to be a catalyst. A way to connect Saudi’s internal innovation with global AI development, and to stake out leadership in a space that’s still being defined.

Why it matters

AI is becoming a geopolitical asset. Countries are no longer just competing on GDP or military power. They’re competing on algorithms, compute, and data sovereignty.

By launching HUMAIN, Saudi Arabia is making a clear statement: we’re not just users of AI, we’re builders of it.
