e& UAE Deploys AI-Powered Drones for Cell Tower Inspections

e& UAE, the country’s largest telecom and tech company, is taking a major step forward in its infrastructure management by integrating AI-powered autonomous drones to inspect cell towers. The move is aimed at boosting operational safety, speed, and sustainability across its nationwide network.

This new system merges real-time AI analytics, automated drone flights, and remote tracking, marking a significant evolution in how telecom assets are maintained.

Safer, Smarter Inspections from the Sky

Instead of relying on manual inspections, e& UAE’s new system allows drones to carry out complex tower inspections without the need for on-site teams. These drones are controlled from the recently launched Drones Operations Centre, developed in partnership with the UAE Cyber Security Council and the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).

From the command centre, expert teams monitor every flight live, ensuring safety standards are met and inspections are completed accurately.

“The integration of autonomous drones into our operations reflects our commitment to reimagining network operations through cutting-edge innovation that improves reliability, safety, and sustainability,” said Marwan Bin Shakar, Acting Chief Technology & Information Officer at e& UAE.

AI Adds a Layer of Intelligence

The drones are collecting images and analysing them in real time using advanced AI. This allows e& to detect issues like structural damage or wear early, helping teams take action before problems escalate.

The system supports data-driven decision-making, making it easier to schedule preventative maintenance, extend equipment life, and avoid unexpected service interruptions.

Each inspection creates detailed digital records that are fed into e& UAE’s infrastructure management systems. This supports predictive maintenance planning, better use of physical assets, and a notable reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional inspection methods.

Broader Tech and Safety Goals

The rollout of the Drones Operations Centre is part of a broader national strategy to advance unmanned traffic management (UTM) and integrate drones into the UAE’s digital infrastructure.

The drone system also helps with emergency response, providing critical support in hard-to-reach areas and enabling remote monitoring of safety compliance and unauthorised activity.

“Through AI-powered insights and real-time control, we are enhancing the safety and accuracy of telecom tower inspections while enabling faster, data-driven decisions that future-proof our infrastructure,” added Bin Shakar.

He also noted that this innovation aligns with the UAE’s national vision for smart cities and technology-led transformation, positioning e& as a key enabler in the region’s digital future.
