Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a major upgrade to its traffic signal control system, integrating artificial intelligence (AI), predictive analytics, and digital twin technology. The advanced system, named UTC-UX Fusion, will be deployed across all major intersections in Dubai, with full implementation expected by the first half of 2026.

Driving Dubai’s Smart and Sustainable Mobility Vision

The RTA’s initiative aligns with Dubai’s smart city strategy, aiming to enhance road network efficiency and optimize traffic flow. By leveraging cutting-edge AI and data-driven solutions, the project reinforces Dubai’s position as a global leader in intelligent mobility solutions.

“This project aligns with RTA’s vision as The World Leader in Seamless and Sustainable Mobility by improving journey time and reducing traffic congestion at intersections by 10% to 20%,” said Hussain Al Banna, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency at RTA.

The system aims to improve travel experiences for motorists, public transport passengers, pedestrians, and cyclists while giving priority to emergency vehicles and public transport.

How AI and Digital Twin Technology Enhance Traffic Management

The upgraded UTC-UX Fusion system introduces several advanced traffic management features, including:

  • Predictive Traffic Analysis – Uses AI to dynamically adjust signal timings based on expected traffic patterns.
  • Digital Twin Technology – Simulates real-time signal adjustments, allowing officials to assess the impact before actual implementation.
  • Priority-Based Traffic Management – Enables smart prioritization for emergency vehicles and public transport.
  • Future Road Sensor Integration – Utilizes data from next-gen sensors to refine signal timings and improve efficiency.

“The upgraded traffic signal system offers several advanced features, including predictive traffic analysis to dynamically optimise signal timings in anticipation of expected traffic movements,” Al Banna explained.

A Step Toward AI-Driven Smart Mobility

One of the key innovations of the UTC-UX Fusion system is its adaptive decision-making capability. The system can:

  • Analyze real-time traffic data and automatically adjust signal timings to optimize flow.
  • Support future smart transport initiatives, including Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS/V2X), which enable communication between autonomous vehicles and traffic signals.
  • Reduce travel times and enhance overall mobility, making Dubai’s roads more efficient and seamless.

“The system dynamically adapts to real-time traffic changes by analyzing data and making intelligent decisions,” Al Banna added.

The Future of Dubai’s Traffic Management

Dubai’s AI-powered traffic control system  is paving the way for next-generation smart mobility solutions, making transportation safer, faster, and more efficient by integrating real-time data, automation, and predictive AI.

With AI, digital twins, and connected vehicle technology, Dubai will continues to position itself at the forefront of global intelligent transport systems, ensuring a seamless mobility experience for all road users.
