Google Unveils $250 Per Month ‘AI Ultra’ Plan: Is This Premium AI Subscription Worth It?

Google’s Bold New AI Subscription Tier

In a significant move to monetize its artificial intelligence offerings, Google has announced a new premium subscription tier called “Google AI Ultra,” priced at a substantial $249.99 per month. Revealed at Google I/O 2025, this new plan positions itself as the ultimate package for AI power users and creative professionals who demand cutting-edge capabilities and the highest usage limits.

Josh Woodward, VP of Google Labs and Gemini, described the new tier as being “for the trailblazers, the pioneers, those of you who want cutting-edge AI from Google.” The company is positioning Ultra as a “VIP pass” to Google’s AI ecosystem, targeting filmmakers, developers, creative professionals, and anyone who demands the absolute best that Google AI has to offer.

What Google AI Ultra Includes

For the $250 monthly investment, subscribers will receive:

Google ai pricing

Advanced AI Models and Capabilities

  • Gemini 2.5 Pro: Access to Google’s most powerful AI assistant with advanced reasoning capabilities
  • Deep Think: Early access to an enhanced reasoning mode (coming soon)
  • Veo 3: Google’s latest video generation model with native audio generation
  • Project Mariner: An experimental AI agent that can manage up to 10 web-based tasks simultaneously

Creative Tools

  • Flow: Google’s new AI filmmaking tool with 1080p video generation, advanced camera controls, and early access to Veo 3
  • Whisk Animate: Create 8-second videos from images with the highest usage limits
  • NotebookLM Plus: Enhanced research capabilities with the highest usage limits

Integration Across Google Ecosystem

  • Gemini in Chrome: AI assistance directly in your browser (starting tomorrow)
  • Gemini in Gmail, Docs, and other Workspace apps: Advanced AI assistance for productivity
  • Real-time speech translation in Google Meet: Initially in English and Spanish, with more languages coming soon

Additional Premium Features

  • 30TB of cloud storage across Google Photos, Drive, and Gmail (which would cost $149.99/month separately)
  • YouTube Premium individual subscription (normally $13.99/month)

Rebranding of Existing AI Subscription

Simultaneously, Google is rebranding its existing Google One AI Premium plan (previously known as Gemini Advanced) to “Google AI Pro.” This plan will remain priced at $19.99 per month and will continue to offer access to Gemini 2.5 Pro, 2TB of storage, and other AI features, though with lower usage limits compared to the Ultra tier.

Competitive Positioning

Google’s new Ultra tier is notably more expensive than comparable offerings from competitors. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Pro costs $200 per month, and Anthropic’s Claude Max is similarly priced. Google appears to be justifying the premium by bundling substantial cloud storage and YouTube Premium, along with exclusive access to its most advanced AI models and experimental features.

For first-time subscribers, Google is offering 50% off for the first three months, bringing the initial cost down to $125 per month.

Availability

Google AI Ultra is available starting today in the United States, with plans to expand to additional countries in the coming months. Meanwhile, Google AI Pro (formerly AI Premium) will continue to be available globally and is now being offered free to university students in Japan, Brazil, Indonesia, the UK, and now the US.

Is It Worth It?

The $250 monthly price tag puts Google AI Ultra firmly in the premium category, likely appealing to professionals who can justify the expense through productivity gains, creative outputs, or business applications. The inclusion of 30TB of storage (which would cost $149.99 separately) and YouTube Premium does add significant value to the package.

For creative professionals, the advanced video generation capabilities with Veo 3 and Flow could potentially replace certain production costs. Developers and researchers will appreciate the access to Google’s most capable AI models and highest usage limits.

However, casual users and even many professionals may find the Google AI Pro tier at $19.99 sufficient for their needs, especially since it still provides access to Gemini 2.5 Pro and many of the same features, albeit with lower limits.

The Future of AI Subscriptions

Google’s move signals a trend toward tiered AI subscription models that separate casual users from power users and professionals. As AI capabilities continue to advance, we may see further segmentation of subscription tiers tailored to specific use cases and industries.

For now, Google AI Ultra represents the premium end of consumer AI subscriptions, setting a new ceiling for what companies believe power users are willing to pay for cutting-edge AI capabilities.
