In 2025, I am dedicating more time to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), assisting organisations in integrating artificial intelligence (AI), enhancing leadership, transforming human resources, and promoting equity. The UAE’s ambitious vision to become a global leader in AI by 2031 presents a unique opportunity for organisations to align with national objectives and drive innovation within their operations.

The Middle East: Embracing AI for Economic Diversification

The Middle East, particularly the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia, is investing heavily in AI as a cornerstone for economic diversification. The UAE appointed Omar Al Olama as the world’s first Minister for Artificial Intelligence in 2017, underscoring its commitment to AI development. Under his leadership, the UAE has become a leading nation in AI, with efforts extending beyond national interests to benefit global communities.

Saudi Arabia is also advancing its AI industry, with institutions like the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (Kaust) focusing on AI research and development. The leadership at Kaust has emphasized aligning with international trade regulations to maintain critical collaborations and ensure access to necessary AI technology.

The UAE’s National AI Strategy 2031

The UAE’s National AI Strategy 2031 aims to position the country as a global leader in AI by integrating it across various sectors. The strategy focuses on enhancing government performance, creating new economic markets, and leveraging AI to provide efficient solutions across multiple sectors. Key objectives include:

  • Boosting Government Performance: Implementing AI to streamline services and improve decision-making processes.
  • Economic Diversification: Fostering new markets and industries driven by AI technologies.
  • Integrated Smart Systems: Developing digital infrastructures capable of overcoming challenges and providing quick, efficient solutions.

By focusing on these areas, the UAE aims to create a robust AI ecosystem that not only propels national growth but also contributes to global technological advancements.

MGX’s Strategic Investment in Project Stargate

Demonstrating its commitment to AI leadership, Abu Dhabi’s MGX Fund Management Limited has partnered with global tech giants OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle in the groundbreaking Project Stargate. This joint venture plans to invest up to $500 billion in AI infrastructure over the next four years, marking one of the most significant investments in AI to date. MGX’s involvement underscores the UAE’s dedication to being at the forefront of AI development and its integration into various industries.

Dubai’s AI Vision

Dubai, as a leading emirate within the UAE, has articulated a clear vision to excel in the development and use of AI. The city’s approach emphasizes:

  • Innovation: Encouraging the creation and adoption of cutting-edge AI solutions.
  • Human Benefit: Ensuring that AI applications enhance human well-being and happiness.
  • Ethical Standards: Implementing AI systems that are fair, transparent, and accountable.

By adhering to these principles, Dubai aims to harness AI’s potential while maintaining a focus on ethical considerations and societal benefits.

Strategies for Organisational Leaders to Implement AI

To support the UAE’s vision, organisational leaders can undertake the following strategies:

  1. Develop a Clear AI Strategy
    • Assessment: Evaluate current processes to identify areas where AI can add value.
    • Goal Setting: Define clear objectives for AI integration aligned with organisational and national goals.
    • Roadmap Creation: Establish a phased plan for AI adoption, including timelines and resource allocation.
  2. Invest in Talent and Training
    • Skill Development: Provide training programs to upskill employees in AI competencies.
    • Attract Expertise: Recruit AI specialists to lead initiatives and mentor existing staff.
    • Collaborate with Educational Institutions: Partner with universities and training centres to develop tailored AI curricula.
  3. Foster a Culture of Innovation
    • Encourage Experimentation: Promote pilot projects to explore AI applications without fear of failure.
    • Support Cross-Functional Teams: Facilitate collaboration between departments to generate diverse ideas.
    • Recognize and Reward Innovation: Implement incentive programs to acknowledge contributions to AI initiatives.
  4. Leverage Public-Private Partnerships
    • Engage with Government Initiatives: Participate in national AI programs and councils to stay informed and contribute to policy development.
    • Collaborate with Other organisations: Form alliances to share knowledge, resources, and best practices.
    • Access Funding Opportunities: Seek government grants and incentives designed to promote AI adoption.
  5. Ensure Ethical and Responsible AI Use
    • Establish Governance Frameworks: Create policies to oversee AI deployment and usage.
    • Prioritize Data Privacy: Implement robust measures to protect sensitive information.
    • Monitor and Mitigate Bias: Regularly audit AI systems to identify and correct biases.
  6. Measure and Communicate the Impact
    • Define Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): Set metrics to assess the effectiveness of AI initiatives.
    • Regular Reporting: Share progress with stakeholders to maintain transparency.
    • Publicize Success Stories: Highlight achievements to inspire other organisations and contribute to the national narrative.

Case Studies of AI Integration in UAE Organisations

Several UAE-based organisations have successfully implemented AI, serving as exemplars for others:

  • Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC): ADNOC has deployed autonomous AI systems to enhance operational efficiencies, such as speeding up seismic surveys and improving production forecast accuracy
  • Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC): ENEC is exploring AI applications to manage energy demand more effectively, particularly in international markets like the United States.
  • G42: This Abu Dhabi-based AI conglomerate has partnered with global tech companies to advance AI research and applications across various sectors, including healthcare and finance.

By proactively integrating AI into their operations, organisational leaders can significantly contribute to the UAE’s National AI Strategy 2031. This alignment not only supports national objectives but also positions organisations to thrive in an increasingly digital and competitive global marketplace.

Embracing AI is not merely a technological upgrade; it is a strategic imperative that will define the future of business and society in the UAE. Through visionary leadership and a commitment to innovation, organisations can play a pivotal role in shaping a prosperous and inclusive future.
