Egypt and Jordan have officially completed laying the Coral Bridge subsea cable, marking the first direct digital link between the two countries in over 25 years. Spanning a strategic 15 kilometers across the Gulf of Aqaba, this high-capacity fiber-optic connection aims to fortify regional digital infrastructure and meet soaring demands for data-intensive applications.

A Milestone Collaboration

  • The Coral Bridge cable system was deployed jointly by Telecom Egypt, Egypt’s national telecom operator, and NaiTel, the telecom arm of Jordan’s Aqaba Digital Hub (ADH).
  • It landed in Taba, Egypt, at Telecom Egypt’s new cable landing station, and was completed in Aqaba, Jordan, connecting to ADH’s Tier-III, carrier-neutral data center.

Technical Highlights

  • Fibre-rich and powerful: The system includes 48 fiber pairs, capable of carrying over 1 petabit per second of traffic, a throughput suitable for cloud computing, AI, and data centers.
  • Low latency, low cost: Its short length means faster transmission and lower data costs, critical for latency-sensitive applications.
  • Strategically positioned: The cable leverages both countries’ locations to enable seamless data flow across Asia, Africa, and Europe via Egypt’s extensive subsea and terrestrial infrastructure.

Strategic & Environmental Impact

  • This is the first subsea cable to land in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, extending Telecom Egypt’s digital reach to Taba and opening new corridors for future expansions.
  • The project was implemented with a strong emphasis on sustainability, balancing performance with minimal environmental impact.

Voices from the Initiative

Eyad Abu Khorma
  • Eyad Abu Khorma, Founder and CEO of ADH, called Coral Bridge more than just a cable: “It’s a strategic asset strengthening regional resilience and opening opportunities for high-performance infrastructure.”
  • Mohamed Nasr, CEO of Telecom Egypt, highlighted the project’s value: “Taba and Aqaba’s proximity creates a vital data corridor across the Middle East and Europe.”

Regional Impact & Vision

  • Alternative routing: Coral Bridge provides backup connectivity and redundancy for major enterprises, cloud operators, and content providers, adding resilience to the region’s digital backbone.
  • Bilateral synergy: The venture exemplifies deepening tech cooperation between Egypt and Jordan, aligning with coordinated regional development strategies.
  • Gateway potential: By improving cross-border digital infrastructure, this cable fortifies the position of Egypt and Jordan as regional and global connectivity hubs.

Key Takeaway

The Coral Bridge subsea cable stands as a landmark achievement in MENA’s digital landscape, melding strategic geography, advanced technology, and cross-border collaboration. By enabling faster, more efficient, and resilient connectivity, Egypt and Jordan are paving the way toward a digitally empowered region. This project could become the foundation for future growth in AI, cloud innovation, and high-performance digital ecosystems.
