Saudi Crown Prince and Emir of Qatar

On 9 December 2025, Saudi Arabia and Qatar signed a major agreement to construct a 785 km high-speed electric railway linking their capitals. The accord was finalised during a session of the Saudi–Qatari Coordination Council attended by the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia and the Emir of Qatar.

The project marks one of the most ambitious transport partnerships in the Gulf and represents a new phase of cooperation between the two nations.

A Two-Hour Journey Redefining Cross-Border Travel

The rail line will connect Riyadh to Doha with trains operating at speeds above 300 km/h. Once operational, the journey between the two capitals will drop to roughly two hours, offering a fast and sustainable alternative to flights or long highway routes.

The route will pass through major Saudi cities, including Al-Hofuf and Dammam, and link both countries’ international airports. This connectivity is expected to reshape mobility for millions of residents, commuters and visitors.

Economic Impact Designed to Reach Millions

Officials estimate that the high-speed rail line will serve more than 10 million passengers annually, signalling strong demand for efficient regional travel.

The project is forecast to generate over 30,000 direct and indirect jobs, supporting construction, operations, engineering and service industries. Economic modelling suggests the rail link could add over SAR 115 billion to the combined GDP of both countries over time.

For businesses, the corridor is expected to strengthen trade flows, boost tourism and enhance market access across the Gulf.

A Sustainable Vision Anchored in Long-Term Development

The rail line will use a fully electric system, reducing emissions and aligning with long-term climate commitments in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The project will apply international standards for safety, engineering and smart railway technologies.

Leaders from both countries described the initiative as a strategic step to deepen economic integration and modernise the region’s transport infrastructure.

A Regional Project That Signals a New Era of Cooperation

The Riyadh–Doha high-speed rail is a symbol of renewed partnership between two influential Gulf states. By delivering faster travel, cross-border economic benefits and a cleaner mobility option, the project has the potential to become one of the region’s defining infrastructure achievements.

Construction is expected to span six years, with both countries preparing for detailed planning and engineering work. As progress continues, the rail line will be watched closely as a test case for future cross-border projects in the Gulf.
