xAI Is Open-Sourcing Grok 2: Here’s What You Need to Know

Elon Musk announced that Grok Code is now seeing more usage on OpenRouter than all other models combined. He made the comment on X, highlighting a major shift in the AI coding space.

Usage Metrics

Independent reporting shows Grok Code Fast 1 captured 66 percent of usage share on OpenRouter within four days of launch. During that time, it processed around 169 billion tokens. This figure exceeded the combined token usage of the top 20 competing applications.

Other reports confirmed Grok Code Fast 1 surpassed Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet and climbed to the top of the OpenRouter leaderboard.

Analysis

Strong Market Adoption

The available numbers support Musk’s statement. A 66 percent share and such a high volume of processed tokens make it likely Grok Code outpaced all rivals combined.

Marketing vs Reality

Musk’s claim is bold but not detailed. The supporting figures come mainly from sources aligned with the xAI ecosystem. Independent verification remains limited, so while the claim is credible, it should be read with caution.

Impact on Competition

Grok Code’s rise shows developers prefer faster, more affordable coding models. Competitors such as OpenAI and Anthropic may need to respond with improved speed and cost efficiency.

Conclusion

Musk’s statement that Grok Code leads all other models on OpenRouter appears credible. Usage statistics show strong adoption and dominance in token processing. The claim underlines Grok Code’s rapid growth, though independent tracking will be needed to confirm long-term impact.
