Saudi’s Beta Lab Invests $8.1M in Animal-Free Cheese Startup Nutropy

Nutropy receives $8m

Saudi Arabia’s deep-tech investor, Beta Lab, has joined an $8.1 million funding round in French biotech company Nutropy, marking a step toward sustainable food innovation that could reshape dairy production and consumption in the Kingdom.

Rethinking Dairy through Technology

Founded in 2021, Nutropy uses precision fermentation to produce milk proteins identical to those from cows, but without any animals. Its process involves engineering microorganisms to create casein, the key protein responsible for cheese texture and meltability. When combined with fats and sugars, this forms a milk base suitable for making real cheese without the environmental burden of traditional dairy farming.

The startup’s goal is to bridge the gap between taste and sustainability, offering a true dairy experience while cutting down on land, water, and emissions associated with livestock.

Strengthening Saudi Food Security

Beta labs Invests in Nutropy

Beta Lab’s participation aligns with Saudi Arabia’s long-term vision to build resilient, sustainable food systems.

  • Food independence: Saudi Arabia imports most of its dairy due to climate and resource constraints. Investing in alternative dairy sources like precision fermentation reduces this dependence and supports food security.

  • Sustainability goals: Animal-free dairy aligns with national strategies for environmental conservation and efficient resource use, especially water. By reducing emissions and land use, such innovation supports the Kingdom’s sustainability targets.

  • Innovation leadership: Beta Lab’s investment shows Saudi capital is ready to fuel deep-tech solutions in food, expanding beyond the country’s focus on energy and finance into biotech-driven nutrition.

  • Market potential: As consumer demand grows for high-quality, sustainable dairy, Saudi Arabia could become a regional hub for animal-free dairy production and innovation.

A Regional Opportunity for Nutropy

Nutropy plans to commercialise its products by 2027 across Europe, North America, Asia, and the Middle East. The funding will accelerate industrial-scale production and expand applications beyond cheese to other dairy products.

For Saudi Arabia, this presents new opportunities, from local manufacturing partnerships to regional supply-chain development and technology transfer. It could also inspire home-grown startups to explore fermentation-based food technologies adapted to Middle Eastern needs.

The Future of Food Innovation in Saudi Arabia

The Beta Lab–Nutropy partnership signals a pivotal shift in Saudi Arabia’s approach to food innovation. Beyond reducing dependence on imports, it sets a foundation for sustainable growth in the agri-biotech sector.

As the Kingdom continues to diversify its economy, investments like this illustrate how technology can support both environmental goals and long-term food security. In time, animal-free dairy may not just be an imported innovation but a locally produced solution shaping the future of Saudi food.
