On August 19, 2025, Lenovo announced its decision to open a regional headquarters (RHQ) in Riyadh, positioning itself strategically within the Middle East. Veteran executive Lawrence Yu will lead the new Riyadh office as Head of the RHQ. Giovanni Di Filippo will serve as General Manager, and Zoran Radumilo as Chief Technology Officer for Lenovo Saudi Arabia.

Local Manufacturing and Strategic Commitment

In collaboration with ALAT, a firm under the Public Investment Fund (PIF), Lenovo broke ground on a 200,000‑square‑meter manufacturing facility in early 2025. Located in the Riyadh Integrated development zone, it is due to begin producing locally “Saudi Made” PCs, laptops, smartphones, and servers by 2026.

This move aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, aiming to transform economic reliance away from oil. Matt Dobrodziej, President of Lenovo EMEA, said Lenovo is proud to back this goal: “We are proud to contribute to the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 by supporting industrial diversification, accelerating digital transformation, and enabling sustainable economic growth.” He added this initiative is expected to contribute up to $10 billion to non‑oil GDP by 2030, reinforcing Lenovo’s long-term commitment to the Kingdom’s industrial ambition.

Strategic and Economic Significance

Lenovo’s new presence and upcoming facility serve multiple aims. The RHQ in Al Majdoul Tower gives the company proximity to PIF and government entities, enabling rapid access to regulators and partners. The manufacturing site enhances the resilience of Lenovo’s supply chain and supports domestic production. These moves align with industrial expansion, digital infrastructure needs, and regional market access.

Historical Context and Funding Tie-In

This expansion follows an earlier $2 billion zero-coupon convertible bond deal signed with ALAT in May 2024. Lenovo agreed to locate both its RHQ and manufacturing operations in Riyadh as part of that agreement.

Why This Matters

  • Boost in Local Industry: The factory supports jobs, technology transfer, and long-term manufacturing capacity.
  • Regional Tech Leadership: Lenovo embeds itself in MENA tech infrastructure at a time when AI hardware demand continues to rise.
  • Geopolitical Signal: The strategy reflects China–Saudi cooperation, and benchmarks progress in tech localization.
