Uber and WeRide Introduces Robotaxi Service in Abu Dhabi

Uber has teamed up with WeRide, a leader in autonomous vehicle technology, to launch its first robotaxi service outside the U.S., in Abu Dhabi. This new service will initially cover routes on Saadiyat Island, Yas Island, and Zayed International Airport. It’s part of a bigger effort to bring self-driving vehicles into regular transportation.

The service will initially cover key areas such as Saadiyat Island, Yas Island, and routes to Zayed International Airport. In the first phase of the project, a human safety operator will be present in each vehicle to ensure a secure and smooth ride for passengers. However, both companies plan to move towards a fully driverless experience by late 2025.

Jennifer Li, WeRide’s Chief Financial Officer, stated,

‘WeRide prioritizes passenger and pedestrian safety through rigorously validated autonomous driving technology.’ She added, ‘As the first publicly listed Robotaxi company, WeRide has demonstrated its commitment to safety through over 1,800 days of public operational experience.’

This partnership is also part of Uber’s strategy to collaborate with leading autonomous vehicle firms. Uber has previously partnered with Wayve, Aurora Innovation, and Waabi to expand its footprint in self-driving technology. However, analysts point out that Uber faces strong competition from companies like Waymo and Tesla, which directly develop autonomous vehicle platforms.

Despite these challenges, Uber continues to position itself as a platform connecting riders with cutting-edge mobility services.

According to Noah Zych, Uber’s Global Head of Autonomous Mobility, “We’re thrilled to launch our partnership with WeRide, and receive the support of Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Centre. As we take this next step in Abu Dhabi, we are excited to build on the strength of the Uber platform, helping our partners make autonomous vehicles a part of everyday life.”

Safety remains a top priority for both companies. WeRide’s safety protocols align with Uber’s safety guidelines for all autonomous vehicle partners. Uber and WeRide will closely monitor safety performance to ensure the reliability of the service.

Moving Forward

The Abu Dhabi initiative reflects a growing interest in autonomous vehicle technology in the region, supported by the Integrated Transport Centre. Both Uber and WeRide aim to gradually scale the service to cover more areas, providing the region with a glimpse into the future of transportation.
