Saudi Arabia has announced plans to build a $7 billion high-speed rail line connecting the Red Sea coast to the Arabian Gulf, marking one of the kingdom’s most ambitious transport projects under Vision 2030.
Connecting Coasts and Commerce
The new line, often referred to as the Saudi Land Bridge, will stretch roughly 1,500 kilometres from Jeddah on the Red Sea to Dammam on the Gulf, passing through Riyadh. Once completed, it is expected to reduce travel time between Jeddah and Riyadh from about twelve hours by road to under four hours by train.
Beyond passenger convenience, the corridor aims to reshape freight logistics. It will allow goods arriving at western ports to be transported directly across the country by rail, cutting reliance on maritime routes through the Suez Canal and supporting Saudi Arabia’s growing logistics sector.
Vision 2030 and the Rail Expansion
The high-speed corridor is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader transport modernisation strategy under Vision 2030. The kingdom plans to expand its rail network from around 5,300 kilometres to more than 8,000 kilometres, positioning itself as a regional logistics hub linking Asia, Europe, and Africa.
Officials describe the $7 billion investment as a step toward transforming the country’s inland connectivity. It also supports the government’s target to diversify the economy away from oil and boost the non-oil GDP through industrial growth and tourism.
Still on the Drawing Board
While the announcement has drawn global attention, the project remains in the planning and development stage. Details on construction timelines, funding partners, and contractors have not been finalised. Industry observers expect phased implementation, with freight and passenger sections developed simultaneously.
Despite these uncertainties, the project reflects Saudi Arabia’s growing confidence in large-scale infrastructure delivery. If completed on schedule, the Land Bridge will become one of the region’s most significant rail corridors, symbolising the kingdom’s transition from oil exporter to global logistics powerhouse.
