OpenAI’s New AI Image Generator Now Available for Free Users—But With Limits

OpenAI’s powerful image generator, previously exclusive to paid users, is now accessible to all ChatGPT users, CEO Sam Altman announced on X. The rollout, powered by the GPT-4o model, comes amid OpenAI’s rapid expansion and surging AI adoption.

What’s Changing?

While free-tier users can now experiment with the tool, OpenAI has imposed usage limits—reportedly allowing only three images per day. The demand for the feature has been so overwhelming that Altman joked about OpenAI’s GPUs “melting” under the pressure.

Controversy Over AI-Generated Content

The tool has also sparked debate, particularly after users started replicating the art style of Studio Ghibli, raising copyright concerns. Additionally, some users exploited the generator to create fake receipts, prompting OpenAI to clarify that all AI-generated images include metadata and are subject to content moderation.

OpenAI’s AI Growth Story Continues

This update comes alongside OpenAI’s historic $40 billion funding round, led by SoftBank at a $300 billion valuation. The company also revealed that ChatGPT now boasts 500 million weekly active users and 700 million monthly active users, solidifying its position as the world’s most-used AI chatbot. As AI-generated content continues to evolve, the industry faces both exciting opportunities and critical ethical challenges.
