Google has released one of my favourite AI applications, NotebookLM to Android and iOS platforms, launching the mobile apps on Monday just one day before the Google I/O 2025 conference. This marks a new step for the tool, which was only available via website (desktop) since its initial 2023 release.

What is NotebookLM?

NotebookLM is Google’s specialized AI tool designed to transform how users interact with complex information. Acting as a smart research companion, it helps students, researchers, and professionals analyze documents, generate summaries, and extract insights from various content sources. The platform leverages Google’s advanced large language models to understand context, identify key information, and respond to specific questions about uploaded materials.

Since its introduction, NotebookLM has gained popularity among academic researchers and knowledge workers who need to synthesize information from multiple sources. Until now, these capabilities were confined to desktop environments, limiting its utility for on the go research and learning.

Key NotebookLM Mobile Features

The mobile version retains the core functionality of its desktop counterpart while introducing new features optimized for smartphones and tablets. Google has focused on creating a seamless experience that complements modern mobile workflows.

Audio Overviews: AI-Generated Podcasts on the Go

One of the standout features of the mobile app is Audio Overviews, which transforms written content into listenable AI-generated podcasts based on source materials. This feature addresses the needs of auditory learners and busy professionals who prefer consuming information while commuting or exercising.

” Audio Overviews to help users absorb information in situations where reading isn’t practical. “The feature includes background playback and offline support, making it truly mobile-friendly.”

Users can download these audio summaries for offline listening, effectively turning complex research materials into portable learning resources.

Source Management and Integration

The mobile app allows users to seamlessly integrate with their existing digital ecosystem. When viewing websites, PDFs, or YouTube videos on their mobile devices, users can tap the share icon and select NotebookLM to instantly add content as a new source to their notebooks.

This integration extends to previously created materials as well. Users can:

  • Create new notebooks directly from their mobile devices
  • Access and edit existing notebooks synced from desktop
  • Manage source materials across platforms
  • Share insights with collaborators

This cross-platform functionality addresses a significant pain point for researchers who frequently switch between devices during their workflow.

User Experience and Design

NotebookLM on mobile devices offers both light and dark modes that automatically adjust based on system settings, prioritizing user comfort and reducing eye strain during extended use sessions.

The interface has been optimized for touch interactions while maintaining the clean, minimalist aesthetic that characterizes Google’s productivity tools. Navigation between notebooks, sources, and AI interactions follows familiar mobile patterns, flattening the learning curve for new users.

Early adopters have praised the app’s responsiveness and intuitive design. Tech reviewer Jordan Williams notes, “The mobile version feels like a natural extension of the desktop experience rather than a compromised alternative.”

What to Expect at Google I/O 2025

The timing of this release just a day before Google I/O 2025 suggests that NotebookLM may play a significant role in Google’s AI strategy announcements. Industry analysts speculate that we may see expanded capabilities, new integration points with Google Workspace, and possibly educational partnerships during the keynote presentation.

Google may also reveal usage statistics and success metrics from NotebookLM’s desktop phase, providing insights into how AI research assistants are reshaping knowledge work and academic research.

Looking Forward

As generative AI tools continue to revolutionize productivity and knowledge management, Google’s expansion of NotebookLM to mobile platforms represents a significant step toward making AI research assistants more accessible and integrated into daily workflows.

For students preparing research papers, professionals analyzing industry reports, or curious minds exploring new topics, NotebookLM’s mobile apps provide a powerful companion that travels wherever inspiration or questions arise.

The NotebookLM apps are available now for download on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Users with existing NotebookLM accounts can simply log in to access their previously created notebooks and continue their research seamlessly across devices.
